Fun Ways to Celebrate Johnny Appleseed Day
Every fall, it is fun to welcome the new season by incorporating Johnny Appleseed and/or apples into your classroom! I love to incorporate apples and Johnny Appleseed into my literacy, science, and math instruction by covering the skills I need to cover but with an apple twist! If you’re short on time, you might also have a Johnny Appleseed Day on a Friday.
Introducing Johnny Appleseed
I always love to introduce Johnny Appleseed to my students through a read-aloud. After reading a book about Johnny Appleseed, we practice sequencing skills by sequencing the events in the story or Johnny’s life. For older students, they might write a retelling of the story. I also give my younger students emergent readers about Johnny Appleseed so they can practice reading about his life during independent reading or at home. Older students might practice comprehension skills with a reading comprehension passage about Johnny Appleseed’s life.
Johnny Appleseed Day Literacy Activities
To keep the theme of Johnny Appleseed going, my students practice alphabetical order using Johnny Appleseed vocabulary words or by writing a how-to writing about how to make apple pie. After writing about how to make apple pie, students complete an apple pie craft to be displayed with their writing.
After we study the life of Johnny Appleseed, I incorporate apples into our math, science, and social studies instruction.
Johnny Appleseed Day Math, Science, and Social Studies Activities
Students taste different types of apples, vote on their favorite, and graph the results.
Students also learn about the parts of an apple and the life cycle of an apple. After learning the parts of an apple, students create a craft to label the different parts. Then, after learning about the life cycle of an apple, students create a craft to sequence the steps.
All of these Johnny Appleseed activities and more are included in my Johnny Appleseed Unit!
Included are apple literacy activities such as a non-fiction apple emergent reader, organizers and charts to brainstorm information about apples, parts of an apple labeling and cut and paste activity, and an apple craft.
