Reading Fluency Practice Strips
After students learn to decode, reading fluency is the next step. Reading fluency is the ability to read as you talk! When students read fluently, they read words accurately, at a good pace, and with good expression and comprehension. After noticing my students needed additional practice with reading fluency and expression, I wanted to create an engaging activity to help them with their fluency skills. Thus, Reading Fluency Practice Strips were born!
Do your students need practice with oral reading fluency and reading with expression? Many students do, and these Reading Fluency Practice Strips will help with both! Students will be having so much fun practicing reading fluency and reading expression skills that they will think they are playing a game instead of practicing reading skills!
What are Reading Fluency Practice Strips?
For this activity, I place the strips in a bag and have students draw one. Students then practice reading the fluency strip several times both independently and with a partner before reading it in front of the class to practice fluency and expression. For a fun twist, you could also have students pretend to act out the fluency cards. At the end, pick a few students who read fluently and with expression to receive an “award.” This award could be given to students every time (laminate and let them keep it for a designated time) or over a period of time.
These reading fluency strips could be used in a multitude of ways including small groups and centers. Additionally, they can be used over and over again, which will give students a lot of practice with reading fluency and expression!
