History is one of my favorite subjects to learn and read about, so I always get excited when I get to teach my students about history and historical figures. Presidents Day is always one of my favorite holidays as a teacher because I love getting to share my love of history and random historical knowledge with students. There are so many fun ways to incorporate the holiday into your classroom!

Literacy Presidents Day Activities

Every year, I focus on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. My students and I read about these two presidents through texts, emergent readers, and reading comprehension passages. We then take what we have learned and showcase our knowledge by completing timelines and fill-in-the-blank sentences and comparing the two presidents. Presidents Day is also a fun time to learn about Air Force One and The Secret Service, and my students always have a blast learning about them!

I usually try to incorporate Presidents Day with the skills that my students are learning in class. Students might practice comprehension skills with a fill-in-the-blank activity. Students can also review facts and opinions by sorting statements related to Presidents Day.

Students also practice Presidents Day vocabulary words by sorting them into alphabetical order.

Writing Presidents Day Activities

After learning about the roles and responsibilities of presidents, students write about their hopes for the world and how they would make the world a better place as president.

Additionally, students practice their writing and research skills by researching and writing about a president.

George Washington is a National Geographic Kids biography that introduces kids to George Washington, his childhood, his early adulthood years, his presidency, and his legacy.

A Picture Book of George Washington is another great biography about George Washington. It is presented in more of a picture book format, but it also does a great job of teaching students about George Washington, his childhood, his adult years, and his presidency.

Abraham Lincoln is a National Geographic Kids biography that introduces kids to Abe Lincoln, his childhood, his early adulthood years, his presidency, and his legacy.

Math Presidents Day Activities

For math, you can incorporate Presidents Day mystery hundreds chart pictures into your math block or math centers. Students will search for numbers on a chart and color them according to the code. When finished, pictures of the United States flag, Abe Lincoln, or George Washington will appear! Students can also practice missing addends with a fun practice worksheet.
