3 Simple Mother’s Day Activities Your Students Will Love Making

Mother’s Day is one of my favorite times of year to do something special in the classroom. There is something so sweet about watching students light up as they think about the special women in their lives and pour that love into a handmade gift. And the best part? You can sneak in some fantastic writing practice while completing Mother’s Day activities at the same time, without students even realizing it!

Whether you have a full week to dedicate to a Mother’s Day project or just a couple of days, here are some options that work beautifully for any classroom schedule. These Mother’s Day activities are low-prep, hands-on, and the kind of thing students are genuinely excited to do!

Mother’s Day Survey

One of my absolute favorite Mother’s Day activities to do with my students is an All About My Mom survey/questionnaire. Students fill in the blanks on a survey about their mom (or a special person in their life). Once we finish the survey, I have my students draw a portrait of their mom. We add these to the survey to make a sweet, keepsake gift she’ll want to hold onto forever!

One reason I love the questionnaire and survey format is that it gives students a structured way to write without staring at a blank page. Even reluctant writers will happily fill out “My mom’s favorite food is…” without a second thought. And for your stronger writers, the open-ended prompts give them space to elaborate and get creative. Their answers are always the sweetest, and sometimes the funniest, things to read!

Mother’s Day Book Craft

If you have a little more time or are looking for a more in-depth project, this Mother’s Day book craft is an adorable keepsake your students will be so proud of. It’s simple to assemble and easy to differentiate with blank writing pages or sentence stem writing pages, depending on your students’ needs.

The kids get so invested in drawing their illustrations and completing each page. It works as a wonderful, authentic writing activity, but because it’s a gift, they don’t even realize they’re practicing their skills! Once finished, we wrap their Mother’s Day books, and the excitement to bring them home is just the best thing!

Print & Go Mother’s Day Books

If you’re short on time, these Print & Go Mother’s Day books are perfect! They’re quick to copy and assemble, require minimal prep, and sentence stems are included to help every student complete their pages with confidence.

I usually spread Mother’s Day activities out over a couple of days or even a full week, so nothing feels rushed. By the time they’re done, students have a finished product they are genuinely proud to give! You also have authentic writing to look at if you need it.

Moms Will Treasure These Mother’s Day Activities

I’ve had family members reach out after Mother’s Day to share how much their families loved these surveys and books. They end up on refrigerators and in keepsake boxes, and moms hold onto them for years. Doing a Mother’s Day project is one of those activities that feels good, and kids walk out the door proud of what they made!
